[G] [D] Well, she drove from California / In the hottest part of summer [G] [C] Landed up in Taylor County, / the Texas town of Abilene. [G] [D] [C] Where she wants to finish college / And make a brighter future for her son, [G] Who's nine years old. The young boy's Daddy made a promise / That he'd love the mom forever But I reckon that a promise / Doesn't say just what it means For the Daddy broke his promise / And he also broke the heart of this young son Who's nine years old. [C] [G] [C] [G] But she's survivin' fine / She's splittin' up her time [C] [G] [D] Twixt work and school and fixin' up a meal. [C] [G] [C] [G] And her heart belongs to God / And she doesn't find it odd [C] [G] [D] To expect He treats His promises as real. Well, she's found herself a church home / made some friends up at the workplace Got her boy enrolled in school / and got her new place nice and clean. But she finds that she's still lonely / she needs more love than she can get from her young son, Who's nine years old. But she knows that she's a pilgrim / trav'ling to a great location It's just that being on the road / sometimes makes Life seem kind of mean. But she's trusting in her Savior / He'll be her husband and a father to her son Who's nine years old. And she's survivin' fine / She's splittin' up her time Twixt work and school and fixin' up a meal. Her spirit and her mind / have strength enough to find This life is just a shadow of what's real She'll suffer come what may / And teach her son to pray To make sure that he has the Holy Spirit's seal. And her heart belongs to God / And she doesn't find it odd To expect He treats His promises as real. She hopes to see her son grow up well / learn to be a Godly man now So that he can have a family / that is just what God has dreamed. And she wants her son to show God / to his son and then his grandson long before they're nine years old. To pass the flame, until he's old.
